I got a question about about an engagement ring?

I am wondering if I can buy a band ring or simple engagement ring before I propose to my girlfriend. I really like the idea of keeping it simple and humble. I keep on noticing that engagement ring usually have stones on it. Is it wrong for me to buy a band ring for that? I'm just wondering.
